Ray McFayden Comer was born on March 8, 1933 in Ellerbe, North Carolina.  He attended Ellerbe Elementary School and graduated from Ellerbe High School in 1951. Ray attended Presbyterian Junior College (1951 - 1953); and, North Carolina State College (1953 – 1956), where he graduated with a B.S. in Education. Ray later attended A & T State University (1976 – 1978) were he completed a M.S. in Education.

Ray’s profession was education and he taught vocational agriculture for more than thirty years in North Carolina: Gibson High School, in Gibson from 1956 – 1957, Stokesdale High School, in Stokesdale from 1959 – 1962, and Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro from 1962 – 1986.

On March 24, 1956, Ray married Marjorie Gwendolyn Maness, and they were blessed with three children: Linda Susan, Allen Ray and Laura Janice. From July 1957 to April 1959, Ray served in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of E-4. He was a test administrator, stationed in Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Ray was a member of Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church in Ellerbe, NC, and Stokesdale United Methodist Church in Stokesdale, NC. He was a member of the Administrative Board at Stokesdale United Methodist Church, serving as Treasurer and a member of the Finance Committee.

Ray Comer was initiated, passed and raised in Stokesdale Lodge No. 428, A.F. & A.M., in 1965. He was twice elected Master of the Lodge and served as Secretary for 27 years from 1967 and 1997.

In 1971, he joined the Greensboro Valley of Scottish Rite and served as the Almoner. He was invested with Knight Commander Court of Honor in 1989, Coroneted 33° in 1993 and served on the SGIG Advisory Conference.

In 1979, Ray joined the Greensboro York Rite Bodies and became Illustrious Master of the Council No. 3 and received Thrice Illustrious Master Degree in May 1995. He was anointed High Priest in May 1997 and served as Eminent Commander of Ivanhoe Commandery No. 8, Knights Templar in 1995.

Ray was active in numerous Masonic bodies including the York Rite College N.C. College No. 69 in May 1985; N.C. Piedmont College No. 124 in July 1988; the Order of the Purple Cross in 1991; Governor in 1992 and Treasurer from 1993-2011. He was also a member of Nathaniel Greene Council No. 34, Allied Masonic Degrees in 1982; Sovereign Master, 1986; Secretary/Treasurer, 1987 – 1997; Red Branch of Eri, 1986; Royal Arch Mariner in 1994; Excellent Master in 1995; St Lawrence the Martyr in 1995; Architect & Grand Architect in 1993; Order of Bath in 1992 and Order of Cork in 1992.

He became a member of Knight Masons, Shamrock Rose & Thistle No. 2 in 1989; the Royal Order of Scotland in 1989; Roanoke Council No.1 Royal & Select Masters in 1987; and, Knight York Cross of Honour, Lily of the Valley Priory No.1 in 1998 and Prior in 1996.

Ray served as District Deputy Grand Master of the 36th District of Grand Lodge of North Carolina from 1988 - 1990. He was the assistant Grand Tyler and a member of the Grand Lodge Planning Committee in 1996. That same year he was presented the Joseph Montfort Medal.

In 1997 Ray was initiated in Stokesdale Chapter No. 202, Order of the Eastern Star. He served as Worthy Patron for the Eastern Star three times. He is also a member of Rose Chapter No. 178, Order of the Eastern Star in Greensboro, North Carolina.
